Job, in the bag
Good news arrived when Amogelang received a call from the recruiting agency, and they invited her to a job interview.
After three days of being anxious and worrying about the people she would be competing against, she found only two people who, unlike her, didnât have much experience with civil engineering projects. She hoped this would be an added advantage and the job was as good as hers.
History had taught her not to be too sure, as she had many disappointments. They told her they would respond to them in less than a week. They kept their word and did. Amogelang got the job. She would replace Opeloâs boss, whoâd been demoted because heâd sexually harassed Opelo. Amo would head the new mining projects. Her connections with former colleagues in the different mining companies would come in handy, and the liaising skills she acquired from her previous job.
Before she started work on the 1st of October, the housemates attended Opeloâs graduation ceremony and met Opeloâs family. They went for lunch afterwards. Opeloâs parents still looked young, in their forties. Her siblings resembled her a lot. Her parents thanked Amogelang for housing their daughter. Opelo had told them how generous Amogelang had been. They thanked the ladies for being good role models in Opeloâs life.
On Monday, Amogelang reported to work. The human resources officer showed her the companyâs policies and gave her pension and medical aid forms to fill. As she signed the paper, it dawned on her that her bank loan problems would be a thing of the past. She had a job and housemates whoâd become friends. Her life had improved drastically.
Once done with all the document signing, she was handed over to the project manager for the rest of the induction. The project manager wanted to wait for Mr Motswagole to arrive first so that Amogelang would be introduced to him before being formally introduced to the whole staff.
Amogelang saw Opelo sitting at a desk, and they smiled at each other as she walked past her workstation. The project manager noticed the brief exchange and asked whether they knew each other. Amogelang said yes without hesitation. He never asked how. He showed her office before taking her to the boardroom, where they discussed her responsibilities. He was impressed with her experience and assured her she was the right person for the job. That gave her a boost of confidence.
